FZ18 Blue Band Phenomenon

1. What is the Blue Band Phenomenon?

A lot FZ18 cameras had the"Blue Band Phenomenon".
In Januari 2008 Panasonic found the solution, so newer camera's don't have this problem.
Panasonic said that the blue band condition was not in every FZ18, it's likely in only a very few.

An affected camera gives under certain conditions a blue band on the left side of a picture.

This blue band is always in the left part of the picture.

My fz18 camera was a real "BlueBander". But in the most of my first 5000 pictures (in daylight conditions) I never saw the Blue Band.
I suppose that less then 1% of my first pictures were defective.
In December (with the bulb- and candlelight of Xmas) I saw much more BlueBands, special in the high sensitivity mode.

It costed Panasonic about 3 month (from end November 2007 until March 2008) to find the solution and to instruct their service centers.
And the fix was simple: replacement of 2 capacitors and chip inductor.

2. Test if your camera has a Blue Band
2.1 Hand Cover Test
Use the P-mode of your camera.
Take the whitebalance "halogen" (bulb ico).
Make a picture with iso 200(or 400) and contrast -2 (in menu pict.adj)
Cover the lens for three quarter with your hand (special on the left side)
and make a picture in bulblight!

Some camera owners saw in the test a bright blue band and others saw a weak one.
If you have a Blue Band you can see it already in the review mode.
If you see a Blue Band then report your problem to Panasonic and ask a repair of your camera.
If you can not see a blueband in this test, then you don't have one or a only very weak band without consequences for your image quality .

2.2 Black Photo
You can also make a black photo.
Use M mode with T<1/1000.
Take the whitebalance "halogen" (bulb ico).
Make a picture with iso 200(or 400) and contrast -2 (in menu pict.adj)
Cover your lens with the cap, your hand or a cloth and make a picture.
If you have a Blue Band you can see it already in the review mode

Panasonic said:
- If a customer's FZ18 shows the problem by placing the lens cap on the lens and taking a photo, it will be corrected.
